Less is always more

Bruce Lee ingeniously said, “It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.”  I’m ready to get t-shirts made of this and tout it as my own personal slogan… it’s soooo true!

This principle applies readily to user experience and product design because less is always more. I learned early in my career that the design process begins by creating a jumbo list of every feature that could be part of a product and then stripping away all but the unessential for launch… everything else can be added in later only if there is enough customer demand for it.

Scott Olson wrote an interesting piece about it called “Why is Simple Design So Hard” that talks about how products are affected when there is a lack of vision regarding a products presumed use. Read it here.
